This months Newsletter was printed on Thursday 6th May, as many adults went to the polls to elect a new Government. A great deal has been said by some of the parties in recent weeks about the need for change. Change is something that we are well used to in schools and at KMS, and there is rarely a month goes by without a new initiative being launched or without a new event or activity taking place.
Later this term we are organising a ‘World Cup Cross-Curricular Day’ that will involve and hopefully engage all pupils and help them develop their Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.
PLTS as we call them for short, are designed to help us to continue to move away from ‘teachers teach and pupils learn what they are taught’ towards more enquiry-based learning, where responsibility for and ownership of learning is transferred increasingly to pupils.
Encouraging and enabling pupils to participate in what is going on around them, in and outside the classroom, to be able to think creatively and reflectively, to manage their own time and personal development, to work effectively as a member of a team and to be able to carry out independent enquiry are vital preparation for what lies ahead.
It is entirely possible that by the time we have the next General Election, many of our Year 8 pupils will be able to vote. Thanks to initiatives like the one above, and all the other good work that is taking place in our school, by the time this happens these young people will be well-placed to make informed decisions and play a full, confident and active part in tomorrow’s world.
Whether the colour of our country today is red, blue or yellow, (and not forgetting green!) the future looks bright at KMS!
