History

At Kirkburton Middle school we aim for and encourage all our pupils to become successful learners, who enjoy working who make progress and achieve. Learning and undertaking activities in history contributes to achieving this aim.

History fires pupil’s curiosity and imagination, moving and inspiring them with the dilemmas, choices and beliefs of people from the past. It helps pupils develop their own identities through an understanding of history at a personal, local, national and international level. It helps them to ask and answer questions of the present by engaging with the past.

At Kirkburton Middle School each pupil has the opportunity to develop an understanding of the key concepts that underpin the study of history. Chronological understanding, Cultural, ethnic and religious diversity, Change and continuity and Cause and consequence, Significance and Interpretation of history These concepts are developed through the study of British, European and World History.

In year 6 pupils study The Ancient Egyptians and The Invaders, in year 7 The Development of Political Power from the Middle Ages to the twentieth Century and in year 8 The way in Which Beliefs, Ideas and Attitudes of
People in Britain have changed over time.

Enrichment activities are organised throughout the year. Pupils are involved in making arts and crafts from the time period they are studying and we arrange visits from Danelaw, a company who specialise in bringing history alive by recreating characters from the past ( we invite a Viking and a Civil War Soldier! )

We organize a “Gifted and Talented” visit to Emley village. This involves the pupils using information from gravestones and the church to find out about the lives of the people who lived in Emley. We are also lucky enough to hear the personal experiences of two gentlemen who served in the Second World War.
