The main aim of the subject is to enable all pupils to achieve the fullest possible development of their abilities in speaking and listening, reading and writing.

We aim to extend pupils’ ability to communicate effectively and to develop their knowledge of the nature, function and power of language.

Language is developed by using it in a meaningful context and therefore pupils are encouraged to have an interest in literature, poetry, the media, current affairs and drama. We try to provide pupils with as many real audiences for their work as possible and to encourage them to see a real purpose in improving their ability to read, write and relate ideas and feelings to others.
